Not very encouraging reply from my MP (and my reply to him) about the Digital Economy Bill
Dear Mr Gwynne
Dear Adam Clark
Thank you for your email, concerning the Digital Economy Bill.
All bills have to have a First Reading, Second Reading, Committee Stage, Report Stage and Third Reading in the House of Commons followed by the same stages in the House of Lords and, whilst the number of days set aside for each stage is a matter for the Government and Opposition Whips to agree, you can’t get legislation through without it going through all of these stages. There is an opportunity during this process for any members to table amendments.
If the Bill has not completed these stages when Parliament is dissolved and if it is not included in the ‘wash up’ – an informal agreement between the House of Commons and the House of Lords on non-contentious issues – then it will fall.
Yours sincerely
ANDREW GWYNNE MP
