Dangerous Minds pal Matt Dunnerstick sent word of this wonderfully appropriate way to raise money for the people of Haiti: a voodoo doll of none other than bigoted, senile, Christian right-wing fucktard Pat Robertson. A man so stupid he blames natural disasters and terrorism on “deals with the devil” and people’s sexual orientation! You can bid for the voodoo doll on Ebay and 100% of the money raised will go to the Red Cross.

Ever wanted to cause Pat Robertson a massive headache?  Give him back pain?  Jab him in the crotch?  Of course you have!  Well then BID NOW to own your very own physical representation of the dark, dark soul of Pat Robertson.

Accessories included with the doll are Pat’s very own “HOLY” BIBLE and BAG OF MONEY taken from real Americans!  WOW!

BID NOW!!!!

(When we first saw this Ebay listing, there were 51 bids and the price was $500. A few hours later, it’s up to 58 bids and $750)

iPod Touch bedding set redefines 'touchably soft' | TUAW

by Michael Rose on Dec 30th 2009 at 9:00PM

All you really need to do is ask yourself three things: Do I have a kid bed? Could my kid bed be so much cooler with an iPod touch duvet and pillowcase? Can I afford 349 Swedish kronor (about US $45)?

If you answered 'Yes! Yes! Uh... yes!' to this informal product survey, Swedish retailer Ellos has exactly what you need. Questions raised in the TUAW offices like "Is that a touch-based capacitive sleep-enabled UI?" and "I wonder if that surface is oleophobic?" may require firsthand testing.

The bedding set looks to be a pretty faithful iPod touch reproduction, with the exception of the misspelled legend for the Calendar icon. It's so faithful, in fact, that I wouldn't be surprised if the company heard from Apple's Swedish legal representation in short order, with a suggestion that this product be sent to sleep with the fishes.

OK, I grant you, this is no Tauntaun sleeping bag -- but if you're raising a household full of Apple geeks, it might be worth a look.

Larkin’ About | greenroom

£5 Wristband

Manchester city centre

Sat 5th December

Come join the fun!

Larkin About 1

In the spirit of New York’s Come Out and Play and London’s Hide & Seek we are proud to announce Larkin’ About on Saturday 5th December 2009 - the first of its kind in Manchester.

From noon until midnight and using greenroom as a base the cities streets will become a playground for social games and playful experiences with pervasive games designed for one to 300 players. There will also be a programme of games at greenroom in the Bar, the performance-space and the workspace.

Now a fast-growing new movement is pushing the concept of computer game design a step further - into the actual world. If you see men and women dashing through the streets at night pursued by sinister, black-clad figures, or a cluster of people receiving instructions from GPS-enabled phones, chances are you’ve witnessed an example of the recent theatrical phenomenon “pervasive gaming”.” Guardian.co.uk

Wristbands are £5 for the whole day, games have been designed and tested all over the country at Sandpit events by a dedicated team and published on ludocity.org a site for social forms of play that take place in public spaces, such as city streets, parks and public buildings. Other games come from designers in the North West who have jumped at the chance of getting involved.

The day will climax with a flashmob which will be kept a complete secret to all but a few until it unfolds somewhere where it is least expected!

Larkin’ About – 5th December noon until midnight, greenroom, £5 – get involved!

Circuitboards recycled as cyberpunk sneakers | Wired UK

By Michael Conroy |21 October 2009

Circuitboards recycled as cyberpunk sneakers

Do you have an attic full of old computer junk, like a first generation iPhone? Sure, you sell it all on eBay, take apart the devices for kicks or even freecycle everything. But why not turn all that digital detritus into a pair of sneakers instead?

The Blazer Pentium 1.0 incorporates circuit boards, rusty metal sprockets, RCA plugs reborn as shoelaces,  even a Pentium chip on the sneaker's toe. The junk was sourced from typewriters, adding machines and of course, old computers.

Artist Gabriel Dishaw spent three weeks on this piece, just the latest in a series of sculptures (no, you can't really wear these) recreating the form of famous sneakers like the Nike High Terminator (below).

Some of Dishaw's creations look positively steampunk despite the circuitry, and his online gallery is worth checking out, if only to appropriate a few creative ideas for finally cleaning out the attic.

As an aside, if an enterprising Wired reader could re-engineer these shoes w ith a working hydraulic system, this gravitationally challenged journalist might finally be able to dunk.

Tortoise survives life at speed | BBC NEWS

It is thought 'Freeway' might be a recent immigrant to the UK

A tortoise with a taste for life in the fast lane has been rescued after he was found wandering across a slip road off the M25 in Surrey.

He was plucked to safety by John Formby, who pulled over on the hard shoulder after spotting him on the M23 slip road at junction seven of the M25.

The site manager from Worthing, West Sussex said he at first thought it was debris, but then spotted a head.

Vets discovered he was micro-chipped in the USA, and have named him Freeway.

Mr Formby, 43, recalled how he feared the tortoise could cause an accident with people trying to avoid it.

He's very lucky to have survived. It would be the icing on the cake if we could reunite him with his owners
Billy Elliott, Worthing and District Animal Rescue Service

"So I pulled over, put my hazard lights on and ran 400 yards down the hard shoulder," he said.

"Some other cars were coming up and a couple went round the tortoise. Two cars and a van drove straight over it, straddling it, but it didn't go back into its shell.

"By the time I'd run back, it had got into the slow lane. I ran out picked it up and put it into the foot well of my car."

He then stopped off at a supermarket to buy it some tomatoes and lettuce before dropping it into Grove Lodge Veterinary Hospital in Worthing on Wednesday afternoon.

Billy Elliott, of Worthing and District Animal Rescue Service, said the tortoise was very friendly and in good condition.

"He must be someone's pet and the family have relocated from abroad and brought him with them.

"He's very lucky to have survived. It would be the icing on the cake if we could reunite him with his owners."
