There was little doubt that Emma Watson had come a long way since playing the bespectacled swot Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the first blockbuster hit featuring the boy wizard.

But just how far she has progressed in financial terms was revealed today when the 19-year-old was named Hollywood's highest paid female actor.

Towering above more seasoned performers such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Angelina Jolie, the star raked in £20m last year in Vanity Fair's list of Hollywood's top 40 earners.

She came 14th in the overall list, and alongside Cameron Diaz was one of only two women in the top 20. She reportedly earned £10m for the final two instalments of the Potter films, The Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2. Co-star Rupert Grint came just behind her in 15th position.

A regular sight on the front rows of fashion shows in London and Paris, Watson last year won a lucrative advertising deal with Burberry and this year launched a clothing collection in collaboration with the ethical label People Tree.

Meanwhile Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry in the films, made £26m, putting him sixth in the table, and bestowing upon him the honour of being the highest paid actor on Vanity Fair's list, the top five positions all taken by directors. His earnings are also likely to be higher than estimated, as other sources of income, such as a promotional deal with Orlando's new Hogwarts theme park, were not counted.

The title of top earner went to Michael Bay, the maker of the latest Transformers film, Revenge of the Fallen, with an income thought to exceed £78m, while Steven Spielberg was in second place with more than £53m estimated earnings.

It's been a good year for James Cameron, whose record-breaking Avatar could sweep the floor at this year's Oscars, having been nominated for nine awards. Avatar recently overtook his last film, Titanic, to become the highest grossing movie ever made. His earning, estimated at £31m, put him at number four in the list.

Tom Hanks, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Nicolas Cage and Russell Crowe all made it into the list, compiled by the magazine after a process of interviewing agents, lawyers, studio executives, and sometimes stars themselves, about earnings.

It takes into account other revenue sources than film-making, such as modelling contracts and sponsorships.

According to the annual Forbes rich list, published last July, Angelina Jolie was the highest-paid actress in Hollywood, making $27m (£17.2m) between June 2008 and June 2009.

Emma Watson Named Highest-Grossing Actress of the Decade

Wednesday – December 16, 2009

Sorry Julia, Reese and Sandra. The actress who really ruled the past decade was ... Emma Watson.

The Guinness Book of World Records has named Watson, 19, as the biggest-grossing female star of the 00s; her film work in the past decade has grossed $5.4 billion in global box office receipts.

Remember Emma Watson's "wardrobe malfunction"?

Cinching the young British actress's top spot was her co-starring role as Hermione Granger in the six Harry Potter films released so far. Fun fact: Watson's overall work actually earned even more in ticket sales than her male Harry Potter chums Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint. (Watson lent her voice to the 2008 animated hit The Tale of the Despereaux.)

Which stars totally lost it in 2009?

Who's the second top-earning actress of the decade? Not Julia Roberts or Reese Witherspoon or Sandra Bullock: it's Dame Maggie Smith, the revered British actress and fellow Harry Potter star (Hogwarts teacher Minerva McGonagall).

What about the men? Guinness names Samuel L. Jackson of Star Wars and other films, but Entertainment Weekly begs to differ, crowning Orlando Bloom, who commanded $6.5 billion in ticket sales in mega-franchises the Pirates of the Caribbean and The Lord of the Rings.

Look back on the year's worst-dressed stars!

Currently an Ivy League student at Brown University in Rhode Island, Watson will next appear in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2 in 2010 and 2011.

Harry And Hermione May Get Sexual In Potter's Deathly Hallows | Cinema Blend

By Josh Tyler: 2009-12-09 02:02:36

For months now a sort of weird, internet back and forth over whether Daniel Radcliffe will be naked in the final Harry Potter movie has persisted. Every time we think that rumor has finally been killed, along comes some new, strange bit of confirmation. This time it comes directly from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows director David Yates who told the Telegraph that not only will Harry be naked, but he’ll be naked in some sort of sexual scene with Hermione. Anyone else just throw up in their mouth?

Yates says the scene happens when Ron and Harry are battling some sort of monster who uses magic to show an image of Harry with Hermione. Yates explains what they’re doing this way, “It’s where Hermione and Harry dance together and is not in the book. It’s something we create for the film and is actually very tender… They also reveal some secrets about each other while dancing.” Color me confused. So they’re dancing naked? Frankly the way the Telegraph words the article seems designed to be intentionally confusing and I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Yates never meant to say there will be any nudity in that particular scene at all. What he does definitively say about it is that it will be “sexy”.

It also seems clear that Yates does intend to have plenty of Harry Potter nudity in the film, even if it may or may not necessarily be in that scene with Emma Watson. “Dan has appeared nude in the past. There are a couple of scenes in the new film in which he will undress, but we’re still thinking about how we present it.” I’m guessing that’s code for they don’t know if they actually want to show his ass or just shoot from the waist up. Come on, it has to be from the waist up right? No need to show us Harry’s little Potter. He describes a second scene in particular where Harry will whip it out. Says Yates, “There is another scene in King’s Cross station, where Harry almost dies and sees Dumbledore. In that scene, he will also be naked.”

Pinch of salt, anyone?
