Throbbing Gristle Make Their Own Buddha Machine | Pitchfork
The Buddha Machine is a tiny box that emits calming ambient sounds-- "I've never heard music as good for reading as the Buddha Machine," wrote our own Mark Richardson in a 2006 column praising the device. Something tells me Throbbing Gristle's take on the Buddha Machine-- dubbed the Gristleism-- will not be quite as soothing.
Made by the industrial provocateurs along with original Buddha Machine creator Christiaan Virant, the Gristleism features "thirteen original and uncompromising loops" and promises a "mix of signature TG experimental noise, industrial drone, and classic melodies and rhythms." Described by Industrial Records Ltd. as the bastard offspring of now-famous ambient loop player the Buddha Machine, GRISTLEISM is part Industrial sound machine, part noise instrument.
The unit features thirteen original and uncompromising loops delivering a mix of signature TG experimental noise, industrial drone, and classic melodies and rhythms.
It's available in three colours - Black, Chrome and Red, is palm-sized (size: w67mm x h69mm x d35mm), features a built-in speaker, volume control, pitch-shift control and loop selector switch. GRISTLEISM has more loops and almost twice the frequency range of the Buddha Machine. GRISTLEISM is powered by two AA batteries and is the world's first and only portable TG aural exciter!
GRISTLEISM was born from a collaboration between Industrial Records, Throbbing Gristle and Christiaan Virant, the creator of the original FM3 Buddha Machines.

There are two pre-order options available as of today.
The first (and most lavish) is the Tri-Colour Limited Edition box.
This special 3-unit Tri-Colour Limited-Edition (containing one of each colour) is presented in a bespoke silk covered, logo embroidered, three compartment box and comes with an exclusive 'numbered certificate of authentication', a card of Gristleism's and a Gristleism enamel pin badge.
Only 100 of the Tri-Colour Limited-Edition box have been produced and is expected to ship mid - late November 2009.
The second pre-order option is the Badged Limited Edition
This edition features an enamel GRISTLEISM badge on the casing and an exclusive card of Gristleism's and is packaged in a exquisite 'chinese paper-cut' wrapping, featuring a repeating TG logo pattern, foil embossing and UV ink.
Only 900 of the Badged Limited-Edition will be produced and is also expected to ship mid - late November.
You will be able to select which colour you want for as long as it remains available, thereafter they will be dispatched randomly.
