Alina Abragimova and the Quay Brothers at Chetham's School of Music | @MIFestival

Saw this last night - highly recommended! As well as being a beautiful backdrop for the amazing film and performance, during the interval you can explore the historic Chetham's School of Music, where John Dee once lived and worked and where Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels used to meet and work when Engels lived in Manchester.

William S Burroughs live at The Haçienda, Manchester, 4 October 1982, as part of The Final Academy (I was there!)

The Final Academy was a series of events curated by the newly-formed Psychic TV to showcase and celebrate the work and influence of William S Burroughs. The main event was in London, but a second, smaller event was held at Manchester's newest nightclub The Haçienda, owned by Factory Records and later to become famous as one of the first clubs to introduce house, acid house and techno to the UK. The line-up for the Haçienda event included John Giorno, William S Burroughs and video projections by Psychic TV (taken from the infamous First Transmission video). As a Haçienda member (an alcohol licence was only granted on condition that The Haçienda opened as a members-only club due to pressure from other nightclubs in the area - a condition that was later dropped) and massive Psychic TV fan, this was one of my favourite nights in the early years of The Haçienda.

Tony Wilson's tombstone

Blog_dsc3646_0-1

It's three years late and doesn't have a FAC number, but this memorial headstone co-designed by long-time Factory folk Ben Kelly and Peter Saville has finally taken its place in Manchester's Southern Cemetery. A beautiful tribute to their friend Anthony H Wilson, the memorial is in keeping with the Factory aesthetic. Creative Review have more information and photographs.

MANCHESTER FLASHMOB! - Protest the Digital Economy Bill

If passed into law as it currently stands, the Bill would allow disconnection, website blocking and could precipitate the death of open Wi-Fi.

Come to the Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester and protest against disconnection without trial and censorship on the Internet.

Meet near the Statue of Queen Victoria.

We'll have flyers; just bring something with which to gag yourself (black tape, mask, "censored" sticker etc), we will have some spare tape if you need it!

£5 Wristband

Manchester city centre

Sat 5th December

Come join the fun!

Larkin About 1

In the spirit of New York’s Come Out and Play and London’s Hide & Seek we are proud to announce Larkin’ About on Saturday 5th December 2009 - the first of its kind in Manchester.

From noon until midnight and using greenroom as a base the cities streets will become a playground for social games and playful experiences with pervasive games designed for one to 300 players. There will also be a programme of games at greenroom in the Bar, the performance-space and the workspace.

Now a fast-growing new movement is pushing the concept of computer game design a step further - into the actual world. If you see men and women dashing through the streets at night pursued by sinister, black-clad figures, or a cluster of people receiving instructions from GPS-enabled phones, chances are you’ve witnessed an example of the recent theatrical phenomenon “pervasive gaming”.” Guardian.co.uk

Wristbands are £5 for the whole day, games have been designed and tested all over the country at Sandpit events by a dedicated team and published on ludocity.org a site for social forms of play that take place in public spaces, such as city streets, parks and public buildings. Other games come from designers in the North West who have jumped at the chance of getting involved.

The day will climax with a flashmob which will be kept a complete secret to all but a few until it unfolds somewhere where it is least expected!
