Larkin’ About | greenroom

£5 Wristband

Manchester city centre

Sat 5th December

Come join the fun!

Larkin About 1

In the spirit of New York’s Come Out and Play and London’s Hide & Seek we are proud to announce Larkin’ About on Saturday 5th December 2009 - the first of its kind in Manchester.

From noon until midnight and using greenroom as a base the cities streets will become a playground for social games and playful experiences with pervasive games designed for one to 300 players. There will also be a programme of games at greenroom in the Bar, the performance-space and the workspace.

Now a fast-growing new movement is pushing the concept of computer game design a step further - into the actual world. If you see men and women dashing through the streets at night pursued by sinister, black-clad figures, or a cluster of people receiving instructions from GPS-enabled phones, chances are you’ve witnessed an example of the recent theatrical phenomenon “pervasive gaming”.” Guardian.co.uk

Wristbands are £5 for the whole day, games have been designed and tested all over the country at Sandpit events by a dedicated team and published on ludocity.org a site for social forms of play that take place in public spaces, such as city streets, parks and public buildings. Other games come from designers in the North West who have jumped at the chance of getting involved.

The day will climax with a flashmob which will be kept a complete secret to all but a few until it unfolds somewhere where it is least expected!

Larkin’ About – 5th December noon until midnight, greenroom, £5 – get involved!

Angels of Anarchy: Women Artists and Surrealism | Manchester Art Gallery

I went to see this exhibition yesterday and really loved it.  As well as the usual suspects from the 'first wave' of surrealism (Lee Miller, Frida Kahlo, Leonora Carrington, Léonor Fini) there are works by less well-known and more recent artists such as Francesca Woodman and Eva Švankmajerová.

The exhibition encompasses the whole range of surrealist activities from painting, writing, sculpture and photography to surrealist objects, videos and films including rare film footage of Frida Kahlo and a wonderful short film by Eva Švankmajerová.  While some of the works are very well-known (and much reproduced), seeing them 'in the flesh' shows just how much can be missed in the reproduction and there are plenty of lesser-known works to be discovered.  I was particularly impressed by the work of Ithell Colquhoun who I'd not come across before and is well represented in the exhibition including her own interpretation of the Tarot deck.

If you can get to Manchester and are interested in surrealism and/or women artists you should make sure you see this exhibition, especially as this is the only UK venue for it.  The exhibition runs until 10 January 2010 and entry is £6 (£4 concessions) and under 18s and Friends of the gallery get in free.

If you can't get to the exhibition, the heavily-illustrated catalogue is available to buy from the Manchester Art Gallery online store:

The press release for the exhibition is below and you can find out more here:

Angels of Anarchy: Women Artists and Surrealism | Manchester City Galleries

Angels of Anarchy: Women Artists and Surrealism

Saturday 26 September 2009 - Sunday 10 January 2010
Manchester Art Gallery
Tickets: £6 (concessions £4) Under 18s and Friends free.

Our major new exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see outstanding works by women artists including Frida Kahlo and Lee Miller from public and private collections around the globe.

Women played a huge, but at the time not fully recognised, part in the Surrealist movement. Only recently has an appreciation grown of how crucial women’s contributions were in this movement. Artists such as Meret Oppenheim, Frida Kahlo, Lee Miller, Leonora Carrington and Francesca Woodman are heroines and role models to a whole generation of women – not just artists.

Angels of Anarchy is the first major group exhibition of 20th century women Surrealist artists ever to be held in Europe. Featuring over 100 well known and rarely seen artworks in a variety of media including painting, print-making, sculpture, photography and film, this exhibition will extend and enhance the understanding of these artists’ radical and sometimes still shocking work.

Manchester Art Gallery is the only UK venue for the exhibition, offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the work of so many women Surrealists displayed together.

Free entry for Friends

Manchester Art Gallery Friends get free entry to the exhibition and can visit as many times as they wish. Also, join now and get 50% off lunch in our cafe. With membership starting for as little as £2 a month, find out more about the benefits of Friends membership.

Angels of Anarchy: Women Artists and Surrealism is supported by the North West Regional Development Agency.

Everyday Dreams: Surrealist Art & Culture | Cornerhouse

Everyday Dreams: Surrealist Art & Culture

Starts Wed 7 Oct, 18:30 – 20:30, 8 weeks

This course will focus on the most influential 20th century art movement, Surrealism. In its quest to seek out the marvellous in the everyday, Surrealism did not restrict itself to being an art movement; on the contrary it was influential on, and heavily involved with a variety of visual cultures, ranging from film and photography to fashion and advertising. This course will explore these surrealist manifestations and will cover an international range of well-known and less famous Surrealist artists.

The course will include a curator-led guided tour of the exhibition Angels of Anarchy: Women Artists and Surrealism at Manchester Art Gallery. (Please note that the entrance fee for the exhibition is not included in the course fee).

The course will be led by Dr Patricia Allmer, curator of Angels of Anarchy, author of René Magritte: Beyond Painting, and Research Fellow at MIRIAD, Manchester Metropolitan University.

Beginners’ level – no prior knowledge required.

£60 full / £45 concessions

I'd LOVE to do this course, but wallet says no...
